A ‘BIG’ NIGHT FOR TAMIL ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

BIG Tamil Entertainment Awards, true to its name, treated the audience to an ‘entertaining’ night on the 26th March, 2011. A brain child of BIG FM, this award function was dedicated to honor the most entertaining personalities from four categories- Cinema, Television, Sports and Arts. It was definitely one of a kind in many ways- right from the eclectic mix of personalities from all the four fields present there to the entertaining activities that was conducted. The winners were chosen through the votes of the public.

The show began with a delightful young troupe performing a medley of foot tapping instrumental music that was soon joined by singers Vijay Prakash and Saindhavi. The duo rendered a fusion of the latest and old evergreen numbers which had the audience swaying to their tunes. This was followed by entertaining activities helmed by RJ Balaji who made the celebrity guests crack up along with him. The hosts of the evening ‘BIG’ Dheena and Ramya were witty and sailed the audience through the award function.

The first award presented was a well deserved honor for the stalwart dancer Padma Subramanyam who was given away the Best Entertaining Classical Dancer of the Decade award by Mr. ‘Abirami’ Ramanathan. The delighted dancer looking resplendent in a sky blue sari thanked the organizers, jury and the audience for the honor. When the hosts asked her which actor she would consider as the best Bharathnatyam dancer, without batting an eye lid she replied that it will be no one else but Kamal Hassan.

Honoring the best of the small screen came up next and Kalaignar TV’s Therkathi Ponnu bagged the best entertaining serial award followed by Sanjeev bagging the Best Entertaining actor award on small screen. The queen bee of Tamil serials, Devayani won the Best Entertaining actress award and popular face Brinda Dass won the Best Entertaining actress with negative shades. The all time favorite anchor Gopinath of Vijay TV won the Most Entertaining Anchor award for his show Neeya Naana. Koothu Pattarai won the Best Entertaining Theatre Group of the year.

The much awaited category of awards- Cinema gave us a few surprises and it was clear the organizers have their heart at the right place for the honor was for ‘entertainment’ more than histrionics or anything else. Actor Vidharth won the Entertaining debut actor of the decade for his acting in Myna while Simbu bagged the Most Entertaining actor award for VTV. He sent the audience into a frenzy crooning a bit of the number ‘Evan Di Unna Pethan. Reemma Sen was awarded the most entertaining actress for her performance as a foul mouthed archeologist in Aayirathil Oruvan.

The Most Entertaining villain award was bagged by Venkatesh for Angadi Theru. The delighted actor said that, “Last year on this same day, 26th March, the film Angadi Theru released. Today I am here collecting an award for my performance in the film. What more can I ask for?” The audience applauded hard as he walked back with his award.

But it was Boss Engira Baskaran which stole the show. It won the most entertaining film of the year and also the entertaining director award for Rajesh who gave this winner of a movie. The producers of the film joked that the story of the movie could be written in the back of a bus ticket and that it was the director’s treatment that made a world of difference.

Chinmayi was awarded the entertaining singer award for her rendition of ‘Poove Poove’ from the film Siddhu +2 while Vijay Prakash bagged it in the male category for his hit number Hossana from VTV. Yuvan Shankar Raja was given the award for his music direction in Paiyaa and his sister Bhavadarini collected it on his behalf.

In between the giving away of awards, actress Shammu (Kanchivaram fame), and singer Ranina Reddy sang and danced along with the ‘Flyerz’ dance troupe and set the stage on fire. Standup comedian Bosskey won most of the applause and laughter of the audience for his witty jokes.

The best was reserved for the last for the show ended with a bang with ‘Superstar’ Rajinikanth receiving the ‘Entertainment Phenomenon’ award through a video link. It was a delightful night filled with entertainment and happiness!
